Company Summary

Mega Bloks (now known as Mega Brands) is a Canadian company that designs and produces mostly licensed designs. It produces both jumbo sized blocks for toddlers and standard sized Lego compatible brick kits. As of 2014 they are a wholly owned subsidiary of Mattel.

Mega Brands manufactures its own bricks at a factory in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

In the past they have held the rights for Star Trek and the Despicable Me franchises. At one point, it was the world’s second largest brick producer (by sales), but that may no longer be true.

Items of Note

If you are checking out Mega Brands, here are some of the more interesting things you should know:

• A lot of their licensed material seems to be “obe-shots” where they produce or or two kits under that license.
• They had the Star Trek license twice – in 2004 and again 2016-2018. The Trek Collective has a great page listing all of the old Star Trek kits. It can be found here.
• Mega took an entirely different approach with its minifigs… although the same approximate height, they are correctly proportioned and offer 12-16 points of articulation. For builders who prefer more realistic looking sets, they work much better than the block Lego Minifig, but… nobody has made multiple movies using them, so go figure!
