Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC-1701

This set is another classic USS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series. It is a large, highly detailed model designed for adult builders and collectors. It makes a GREAT display model!

This set came in two versions…

  • The first version had 2888 pieces, red nacelle caps, a gold sensor section, technic based struts and a “non-standard” nacelle end cap.
  • The “upgraded” version used orange nacelle caps, copper colored sensor section, regular brick struts (more detail) and a more classic and nacelle end cap design.

Finished dimensions are 32.56″ Long by 14.17″ Wide and 10.43″ High. Yes, it is big, but not quite as big as the Mega Blocks USS Enterprise.

  1. Okay, this is a tough review for me to write because I happen to have the Mega Bloks version of the same ship. Personally, I think the Mega is much better kit, but it’s an unfair comparison. Mega used a LOT of custom parts in their build, whereas BB pretty much designed their set to use commonly available parts. Also, Mega used a ton of printed parts, where BB actually did something crazy and did all of the secondary hull striping out of bricks! Finally, Mega didn’t try for a (very difficult) smooth finish to the main saucer. Not only did BB give us a smoother finish, but engineered it so there is a minor slope to the parts. Very impressive.

All that said, this kit easily lives on its own, especially the upgraded version which changes the pylon design and gives a lighter color orange nacelle cap. It raises the part count from 2888 to 3021, and they include the parts and manuals to build either version out of the box. Nice!

I built the 2nd version and as expected, it took the better part of a week. Generally speaking, I felt that the design was pretty solid, especially sticking with “standard” parts. With ANY Enterprise kit, the primary challenge is support the main saucer section and the warp engines. It is a delicate balance between strength and weight. BlueBrixx addressed this by making both sections hollow, which is a pretty neat trick. They also used technic parts with the engine pylons; you can’t see them, but it works great.

BlueBrixx did make a few design choices that I don’t entirely agree with, pretty much all related to the lower part of the ship. First, the secondary hull feels a little too “stepped” for my tastes. Mega did the same thing, but for some reason, it sticks out a lot more in this kit. Also, they decided to add some curve to the neck section, even though it is one of the few parts of the ship that is actually supposed to be flat and square. Finally, for a model of this size, the stand is underwhelming. It should probably twice as big and incorporate the ship placard. Fortunately that is something that is easy for the end user to correct on their own.

By the way, this set does NOT come with any minifigs, unless you were lucky enough to buy the combo kit that was offered for about ten days near the end of 2024. BlueBrixx had just announced multiple sets of new Trek minifigs and started offering them in bundle sales, but then lost the license for Star Trek and stopped selling them.

in conclusion, I’d rate this kit a solid 4.6 stars (out of 5). It is a strong design using standard parts and printed pieces where needed. The instructions are fine for Version 1 of the kit, but the upgrade parts bags are not well marked for the Version 2 set, which makes finding the right part challenging. Finally, the finished product is massive! At 32.5″ long, it is definitely a display model, which is great, as long as you have room for it. It makes a great centerpiece when surrounded by other BlueBrixx Trek sets, and I would say that even if I wasn’t a huge Trek fan.
